July 27, 2017: HSC Book Club Poet Tea with Lynne Thompson

Poet Tea with Lynne Thompson

This is a free book club meeting like all WIM book club meetings, just this one has a wonderful poet, tea and snacks with it. See below on what and where to read Ms. Thompson’s poetry, if you are so inclined. Or just come for the snacks (but RSVP so we have enough snacks, thanks).
When: Thursday, July 27, 2017, 5-7pm
Where: Norris Medical Library West Conference Room

Lynne Thompson is the author of “Start with a Small Guitar” (What Books Press, 2013) and “Beg No Pardon” (Perugia Press, 2007). She received a Master Artist Fellowship from the City of Los Angeles for 2015-16.

Ms. Thompson’s “Beg No Pardon” won the 2007 Perugia Press Book Award and the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award. A Pushcart Prize nominee and the author of three chapbooks, “We Arrive By Accumulation”, “Through a Window” and “Jezebels on the Loose”, Ms. Thompson received commissions from Emory University and Scripps College to write poems in collaboration with a choreographer and a sculptor, respectively. Thompson’s poems have previously appeared or are forthcoming in Crab Orchard Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, and Salamander as well as the anthologies New Poets of the American West and Coiled Serpent: Poets Arising from the Cultural Quakes & Shifts of Los Angeles. Thompson lives in Los Angeles, California, where after 20 years, she retired from her position as Director of Employee & Labor Relations at UCLA. (Further proof that not even a day job can keep a poet from the pen!)

You can read Ms. Thompson’s poetry on these websites: http://www.poetry.us.com/lynnethompson.html https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems-and-poets/poets/detail/lynne-thompson as well as http://www.graphitejournal.com/lynne-thompson/ where she provides some insights to her writing philosophy.

Lynne mentioned she’d be reading from Start with a Small Guitar
(http://www.whatbookspress.com/start-with-a-small-guitar.html), also available at Amazon if you’d like to own it, Beg No Pardon, or Jezebels on the Loose.

And here’s a photo from our previous poets tea in February of our past WIM president, Stacy Patterson, and our future WIM president, Kristin Moe, enjoying themselves. The lady next to Stacy is Liz Camfiord of Beyond Baroque Foundation and Penguin Books who was instrumental in publishing “Wide Awake,” the book we read for the event in February. Click here for a few more photos of that very fun event.

As always, you don’t have to be a member of WIM to enjoy the WIM book clubs, however, if you are ever so inclined…

WIM UPC Book club – Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Updated: July 10th … new date!

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
By Gail Honeyman
Book Club meeting: Friday, AUGUST 4th, Noon to 1pm
Ralph & Goldy Lewis Hall (RGL) room 103
For more information about the book, https://goo.gl/6z5fU2
Please RSVP at http://www.uscwim.org/calendar.asp in case there are updates!

Contact Aubrey if you’ve got any questions.

Book description:

Smart, warm, uplifting, the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes the only way to survive is to open her heart.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: she struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. That, combined with her unusual appearance (scarred cheek, tendency to wear the same clothes year in, year out), means that Eleanor has become a creature of habit (to say the least) and a bit of a loner. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kind of friends who rescue each other from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is the story of a quirky yet lonely woman whose social misunderstandings and deeply ingrained routines could be changed forever—if she can bear to confront the secrets she has avoided all her life. But if she does, she’ll learn that she, too, is capable of finding friendship—and even love—after all.

5 Ways To Get A Raise

“The other day, a client shared with me her financial situation at work, and asked some probing questions about money, salary, compensation and promotions that revealed a good deal about her personal money story and behavior.

“She shared this: ‘Kathy, I’m not earning nearly what I should be, despite asking for a raise repeatedly (and being told ‘Not now’). I just don’t know what else to do. And I can’t figure out why I chronically under-earn compared to my peers at the same level. What should I do differently?’

“We delved into her relationship with money overall, including the salaries she’s been earning, how and when she asks for a raise, ways in which she advocates and negotiates for herself, if she has sponsors and mentors, and other key factors impacting her level of success. …

“What are the core factors behind why we’re able to consistently grow our salaries and job earnings?”
“5 Ways To Get A Raise And Earn More Money, And Why So Many Don’t,” by Kathy Caprino, Women@Forbes, May 30, 2017

In the most recent issue of The Economist magazine, there’s an article mentioning the authors of “Nudge,” leading me to wonder if The Economist magazine is stalking me again. An interesting read, nonetheless:
