July 27, 2017: HSC Book Club Poet Tea with Lynne Thompson

Poet Tea with Lynne Thompson

This is a free book club meeting like all WIM book club meetings, just this one has a wonderful poet, tea and snacks with it. See below on what and where to read Ms. Thompson’s poetry, if you are so inclined. Or just come for the snacks (but RSVP so we have enough snacks, thanks).
When: Thursday, July 27, 2017, 5-7pm
Where: Norris Medical Library West Conference Room

Lynne Thompson is the author of “Start with a Small Guitar” (What Books Press, 2013) and “Beg No Pardon” (Perugia Press, 2007). She received a Master Artist Fellowship from the City of Los Angeles for 2015-16.

Ms. Thompson’s “Beg No Pardon” won the 2007 Perugia Press Book Award and the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award. A Pushcart Prize nominee and the author of three chapbooks, “We Arrive By Accumulation”, “Through a Window” and “Jezebels on the Loose”, Ms. Thompson received commissions from Emory University and Scripps College to write poems in collaboration with a choreographer and a sculptor, respectively. Thompson’s poems have previously appeared or are forthcoming in Crab Orchard Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, and Salamander as well as the anthologies New Poets of the American West and Coiled Serpent: Poets Arising from the Cultural Quakes & Shifts of Los Angeles. Thompson lives in Los Angeles, California, where after 20 years, she retired from her position as Director of Employee & Labor Relations at UCLA. (Further proof that not even a day job can keep a poet from the pen!)

You can read Ms. Thompson’s poetry on these websites: http://www.poetry.us.com/lynnethompson.html https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems-and-poets/poets/detail/lynne-thompson as well as http://www.graphitejournal.com/lynne-thompson/ where she provides some insights to her writing philosophy.

Lynne mentioned she’d be reading from Start with a Small Guitar
(http://www.whatbookspress.com/start-with-a-small-guitar.html), also available at Amazon if you’d like to own it, Beg No Pardon, or Jezebels on the Loose.

And here’s a photo from our previous poets tea in February of our past WIM president, Stacy Patterson, and our future WIM president, Kristin Moe, enjoying themselves. The lady next to Stacy is Liz Camfiord of Beyond Baroque Foundation and Penguin Books who was instrumental in publishing “Wide Awake,” the book we read for the event in February. Click here for a few more photos of that very fun event.

As always, you don’t have to be a member of WIM to enjoy the WIM book clubs, however, if you are ever so inclined…

And don’t forget to check our calendar for exciting new events.
